If the coverage rate reaches 80% at the national level, the ratio in rural areas is 60%, while the access rate to sanitary facilities is capped at 37%. The public policy aims for targets of 90% for water and 75% for sanitation by 2030, relying on the National Water Compact signed in April 2026 and the SEWASH program, which provides for 103 mini-distribution networks and 2,900 community latrines in the North.

The transfer of funds is based on the operational support of local financing agencies. The Fund for Equipment and Intercommunal Intervention ranks water supply projects third among the competitions granted to municipalities, providing up to 85% of non-repayable subsidies over the 2006-2026 period. Municipal investments are strengthened by the commissioning of the Yaounde and Surroundings Water Supply Project from the Sanaga River to Batchenga, whose initial flow of 300,000 m3 per day has an extension capacity of 400,000 m3 per day to supply the Central Region.

The direct takeover of networks by local authorities transforms the governance of village hydraulic infrastructures. The obtaining of ISO 14001 version 2015 certification by the agency supporting local authorities encourages the adoption of ecological techniques, such as rainwater harvesting to cope with droughts. The progressive free provision of basic water supply in rural areas constitutes the next challenge to ensure social equity in remote areas from major urban centers.
