On October 19, 2026, the Chadian Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economy formalized this transaction aimed at cleaning up the public institution's balance sheet and reviving residential real estate financing.
The backing of BHT by the financial group founded by Ivorian magnate Koné Dossongui marks the culmination of negotiations undertaken to preserve the financial standing of Chad's mortgage lending specialist. Under the chosen structure, AFG becomes the reference shareholder alongside an institutional shareholder base comprising the State of Chad, the National Social Security Fund (CNPS) and the Chadian Hydrocarbons Company (SHT). The definitive formalization of the new shareholding structure remains subject to obtaining regulatory approval from the Central African Banking Commission (COBAC).
While the Chadian executive has not disclosed the exact amount of the cash contribution or the precise level of share allocation, the recapitalization will provide breathing room for the institution. The equity injection will enable the cleaning up of non-performing loans, bring the bank into compliance with regional prudential ratios and accelerate the modernization of the network's information systems. This financial engineering operation aligns with the strategic guidelines of the "Chad Connexion 2030" National Development Plan. For the Chadian Treasury, the sale of majority control to a strategic private partner reduces the burden of direct budgetary support while ensuring banking governance in line with international standards.
For the Abidjan-based group, already established in West and East Africa as well as in the CEMAC zone through its subsidiaries in Cameroon and Gabon, this operation reaffirms an aggressive expansion policy based on the acquisition of strategic assets and banking portfolios undergoing restructuring.
